Learn The Skill, Finesse And Chess Like Tactics Of Wheelchair Rugby

Learn how to become a North East Barbarian Wheelchair Rugby player! Take your team on a northern rampage, while building trust. Get your team out of the office, be active and learn to work together in an exciting new challenge. Wheelchair Rugby is fairly niche so chances are low that there’s anybody among the team who’s done it before - which means that everyone is at the same level. It would also be a great way to do something to include any staff with disabilities you may have, and be fun for everyone else while ensuring they are not left out.

Trust & Communication Building

Wheelchair Rugby places team building, trust and communication at the forefront, emphasising the importance of relying on teamwork for success - as tempting as it may be to get up and run downfield with the ball and score an easy try, you certainly can’t do that here, and you need to rely on your team to get you there. Bonds can be formed or strengthened, whatever you require.

Create Lasting Memories

The chances are that nobody is coming into the day with any kind of professional/refined experience, so everyone usually throws themselves into it and is game for a good time. It’s all about friendly competition. It’s out of the ordinary, and will create lasting memories for the team to appreciate. Non-wheelchair users might also gain a bit of perspective about what life in a chair is like - even though they’re using one for fun. The whole programme is unisex, with all genders competing together.

A Fun, Exciting and Action Packed day

The North East Barbarians will provide excellent resources and an amazing, authentic environment to introduce your employees to Wheelchair Rugby. Learn To communicate, trust and bond with your teammates while having a fun, exciting and action packed day.

“By the end I actually felt like a wheelchair rugby player”

“Wheelchair Rugby? I had no idea what to expect.

I was met by a very happy and friendly Layth at the front door and he wheeled me into the arena and introduced me to the amazing Mick and Adam. Mick and Adam are a fabulous double act. Mick is an ex pro rugby player who is very warm and welcoming.  Adam is also an ex rugby player and the current Newcastle  Wheelchair Rugby 5’s Coach.

We all arrived and chatted in the arena and then we were directed to our chairs after a warm and happy intro and H&S talk. The wheelchairs were all lined up and ready, they were all labelled with everyone's names, a pair of new gloves (And they were needed), reversible playing vest, and a gift form one of the clubs sponsors, how cute.

The day just flew by, it was amazing fun, I cannot voice how fantastic it was.  Mick and Adam took it in turns to hold different sessions to get us ready and understand the basics. Every exercise we did was fun, challenging and was clearly part of the plan to teach us the game quickly. What was amazing was that we were joined by Newcastle Wheelchair Rugby players (Kev, Sam, Layth, Jeff) in the drills and exercises. So we had players who were more experienced to help us learn the drills and tactics quickly,  on top of Mick and Adams expert coaching.

Even though it was tiring and a proper physical workout, everyone in the team could participate fully and had an active role in the team to score, the ultimate aim of the day. The game at the end was amazing, we were split into two teams and we had Mick as coach and the other team had Adam. We had an hour of preparation before the game with our coaches to talk tactics and run through drills.

The game was so competitive, of course it was, but it was played with such a great spirit. The game ended in a draw, a perfect way to end a perfect day.

Our team was put together at the start of lockdown, so we had been working together for nearly 2 years only meeting on zoom, this was the perfect way to bond the team and we were still talking about the day weeks after and I still go back to watch  the videos on the website.

By the end I actually felt like a wheelchair rugby player and I cannot recommend the day anymore than to say it was perfect, different, challenging, inclusive, and most of all amazing fun. “
